Is ChatGPT Recommending You or Your Competitor?

Short answer: AI assistants recommend the businesses they can clearly identify, verify and quote. If your website explains who you are, what you do and who you serve in plain language, and other trusted sites say the same thing about you, you are far more likely to be named when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation. That work is called answer engine optimization (AEO).

Why does it matter what AI says about your business?

Buyers are changing how they research. Instead of scrolling ten blue links, more of them type a full question into an AI assistant: "What's the best HVAC company near me?" or "Which precious metals dealers have good reviews?" The assistant answers with a short list of names, and many people never click past that answer.

That short list is the new page one. If your competitor is named and you are not, you lose the lead before you ever knew it existed. And unlike an ad, you cannot simply pay to be in the answer.

How do AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend?

Each platform works a little differently, but they lean on the same signals:

  • Clear entity information. Your business name, location, services and founder stated consistently across your site, your Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Answer-ready content. Pages that directly answer the questions buyers ask, in the first sentence or two, are easy for an AI to quote.
  • Third-party mentions. Reviews, press, podcasts, partner sites and industry lists that talk about you. AI models trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
  • Structured data. Schema markup (Organization, FAQ, Article, Person) tells machines exactly what each page is about.
  • Freshness. Recently updated pages and steady publishing signal that the business is active.

How can you check whether ChatGPT recommends you?

Start with a simple test. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and ask the questions your buyers would ask, in their words. Try "best [your service] in [your city]," "[your service] companies with good reviews," and "[your brand] vs [competitor]." Write down:

  1. Whether your business is named at all.
  2. Which competitors are named, and in what order.
  3. Which sources the AI cites, since those are the sites shaping the answer.
  4. Whether anything it says about you is wrong or out of date.

Repeat the test monthly. Answers shift as new content is published, so a one-time check is not enough.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in traditional search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your business get named inside AI-generated answers. They overlap a lot: both reward helpful content, technical health and authority. AEO puts extra weight on direct answers, consistent entity facts and mentions across the wider web. The best strategy does both at once.

Six steps to get recommended by AI assistants

  1. Lock down your entity facts. Use the same business name, address, phone, founder name and service list everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Yelp, industry directories.
  2. Build an About page that proves who you are. Founder bio, credentials, location, links to real profiles. It helps buyers and AI alike.
  3. Publish answer-first articles. Pick the 20 questions your buyers ask most and answer each one in the first two sentences of its own article, then go deeper.
  4. Add FAQ and Article schema. Mark up your FAQs, articles and organization so assistants can parse them without guessing.
  5. Earn mentions on other sites. Reviews, guest posts, podcast appearances, partner pages and local press all feed the sources AI models read.
  6. Track and refresh. Re-run your AI test every month, update pages that are slipping, and keep publishing on a steady cadence.

How long does AEO take to work?

Some changes, like fixing wrong facts or adding schema, can show up within weeks once pages are re-crawled. Earning consistent recommendations usually takes a few months of steady content and mentions. Results vary by industry, competition and how much existing authority a business has.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no way to buy a spot inside ChatGPT's organic answers. You earn it with clear information, helpful content and trusted mentions.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

Yes. For local searches especially, Google's AI Overviews and other assistants draw on business profiles, reviews and map data.

Do I need a new website for AEO?

Usually not. Most businesses can improve AI visibility by restructuring existing pages, adding schema and publishing answer-first content.
