What Is a Good AI Visibility Score? How to Check Yours and Raise It

Short answer: An AI visibility score measures how often, and how well, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your brand when buyers ask about your category. There is no single "good" number, because every tool measures it a little differently. A good AI visibility score is one that beats your top competitors on the same buyer questions and keeps rising month over month. On our free AI Visibility Score, 70 or higher means you're in the running and 90 or higher means you're set up to win AI answers.

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score is a single number that sums up how present your brand is inside AI-generated answers. Think of it as the AI search version of ranking on page one. When someone asks an assistant "What's the best [your category]?" the assistant doesn't show ten links. It writes one answer and names a handful of brands. Your AI visibility score tells you how often you make that short list.

This matters because buyers are already shopping this way. In Product.ai's October 2026 Trust in AI Commerce Report, 41.5% of U.S. online shoppers said they used an AI assistant to research a purchase in the past 90 days. Much of that research never shows up as a website visit. As Gartner put it in a September 2026 analysis, "Declining organic traffic may reflect a measurement failure, not a performance failure." Your AI visibility score helps fill that blind spot.

How is an AI visibility score calculated?

Most tools use one of four methods. Knowing which one you're looking at is the key to reading your number correctly.

  • Mention rate. The share of tracked AI answers that mention your brand. HubSpot explains it simply: if your brand shows up in 30 of 100 answers, your visibility is 30%.
  • Share of voice. Your mentions compared with the competitors you track. Ahrefs calculates it as answers that mention you divided by answers that mention any tracked brand.
  • Benchmark index. A 0 to 100 score that compares how prominently you appear against competitors, like the AI Visibility metric in Semrush's AI toolkit.
  • Readiness score. A 0 to 100 score based on the signals AI assistants use to pick brands, like reviews, third-party mentions and structured data. Our free AI Visibility Score works this way. It shows how ready you are to be recommended and which gaps to fix first.

One important note: scores from different tools are not comparable. A 45 in one tool and a 45 in another can mean very different things. Pick one method, use the same set of buyer questions every time and track it monthly.

What is a good AI visibility score?

Because the scale changes from tool to tool, "good" is relative. Three rules will tell you where you really stand:

  1. Beat your competitors on the same questions. If your top competitor is named in 6 out of 10 answers and you're named in 2, that gap is the number that matters, no matter what the score says.
  2. Watch the trend, not one snapshot. AI answers change as new content gets published. A score that climbs every month is healthier than a high score that's slipping.
  3. Check the quality of each mention. Being named last, described wrong or mentioned without a link to your site counts for less than being recommended first with accurate details.

Here's how to read the result on our free AI Visibility Score:

  • 90 to 100: AI favorite. You're set up to win AI answers. Keep publishing and keep earning mentions to hold your spot.
  • 70 to 89: Strong signal. You're in the running, but a few gaps could still hand the recommendation to a competitor.
  • 40 to 69: Hit or miss. AI might mention you, or it might not. Competitors can win answers you should own.
  • 0 to 39: Invisible to AI. AI likely isn't recommending you yet, and other brands are getting named when buyers ask about your category.

  1. Take the free AI Visibility Score. It's 8 quick questions and takes about 2 minutes. You'll get a score out of 100 and your top 3 fixes. Check your score here.
  2. Write down 10 buyer questions. Use your customers' real words, like "best [your service] for [your type of customer]" or "[your brand] vs [competitor]."
  3. Ask each question on four platforms. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode). Use a logged-out or private window so past chats don't skew the results.
  4. Log what you see. For each answer, note whether you're named, where you rank in the list, which competitors are named, which sources are cited and whether anything about you is wrong.
  5. Do the math. Divide the answers that name you by the total answers. That's your mention rate. Do the same for each competitor to see your share of voice.
  6. Repeat monthly. Use the exact same questions so the numbers are comparable.

How do I raise my AI visibility score?

Our free tool scores the 8 signals that move AI answers the most. Here they are, weighted by impact, with the fix for each one.

1. Get named in the answers you're missing (20 points)

Map the 20 questions your buyers ask AI about your category. Then build pages, and earn mentions, that answer each one with your brand in the answer.

2. Earn third-party mentions (16 points)

AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Aim for best-of lists, industry sites, podcasts, news coverage and partner pages your buyers already read. Endorsements help here too. We cover that in Borrowed Trust: Why Endorsements Win.

3. Publish answer-ready content (12 points)

Turn your buyers' top questions into clear FAQ and guide pages. AI is most likely to quote a page that answers the question in its first two sentences.

4. Build review momentum (12 points)

Send an automatic review request after every sale. A steady stream of fresh reviews on Google, Trustpilot and industry sites is one of the strongest trust signals AI reads.

5. Add structured data (10 points)

Schema markup (Organization, Product or Service, FAQ and Review) tells machines exactly who you are and what you sell, so they don't have to guess.

6. Publish fresh expert content (10 points)

Keep a steady publishing schedule, like two or three expert articles a week. AI favors sources that are current and clearly written by people who know the subject.

7. Make your brand info consistent (10 points)

Use the same name, description, address and details on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. Mixed signals make AI less confident about naming you.

8. Open the door to AI crawlers (10 points)

Make sure your robots.txt doesn't block crawlers like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Add an llms.txt file, and speed up any page that takes more than 3 seconds to load.

Why does AI recommend my competitor instead of me?

Usually it comes down to three things. Your competitor is mentioned on more third-party sites, their pages answer buyer questions more directly, or they have more recent reviews. AI assistants repeat the brands they can verify from many sources. The good news is that every one of those gaps can be closed. How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

Quick fixes like schema, FAQ pages, consistent profiles and unblocking crawlers can be done in a few weeks, and they start to count once AI tools re-crawl your site. Earning third-party mentions and reviews builds over a few months. Results vary by brand, category and how much authority you already have, which is why tracking your score every month matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AI visibility score?

A good AI visibility score is one that beats your top competitors on the same buyer questions and keeps rising over time. On the free Engage Max Media AI Visibility Score, 70 to 89 is a strong signal and 90 or higher means you're set up to win AI answers.

Are AI visibility scores from different tools comparable?

No. Some tools measure mention rate, some measure share of voice against competitors and some measure readiness. Pick one method, use the same buyer questions each time and compare your score only to itself and your competitors.

Can I pay to raise my AI visibility score?

Not directly. ChatGPT and Google now sell ads inside AI answers, but those ads are labeled as sponsored and sit apart from the organic answer. Being named in the answer itself is earned with clear content, reviews and trusted mentions.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

Once a month is enough for most brands. AI answers change as new content is published, so a monthly check with the same questions shows whether you're gaining or losing ground.

Is the AI Visibility Score free?

Yes. The score, your top 3 fixes and the live AI check are all free, with no obligation.
